TURIN: THE ITALIAN PUBLISHING WORLD

MEETS READERS AND NON-READERS

The priority of the Italian Book fair in Turin is to promote books and publishing.

The event seeks to instil new life into books by focusing the spotlight on writing and reading, communication and dialogue, criticism and discussion. The Italian exhibition scene sorely lacked a space specifically designed and managed to feature publishing products. Nine years ago, Turin decided to fill the gap by creating the first Italian Book Fair. The idea was not to compete with book shops but to meet the desire for a point of reference capable of thriving in the course of time. The event's message and programme met with great favour immediately. In the nine years since the first fair, the number of reviews and features about books have steadily multiplied as publishers have effectively and increasingly turned their attention to an ever larger, variegated public. In the course of time, the Fair has first consolidated then broadened its horizons, attracting attention to books and increasing the awareness of members of the trade and public alike. In short, it is now a permanent event in the annual exhibition calendar.

In its choice of discussion topics and concern with the needs of publishers and professionals, the Fair has made books and all those involved with them - both professionals and readers - the leading players in the event. Books encompass the world of culture (publishers, writers, teachers, reviewers, journalists) which, albeit numerically limited, is by its very nature of crucial significance. They also encompass schools, professionals (booksellers, distributors, librarians, publishing promoters) and the general reading - and sometimes non-reading - public. The Book Fair has no intention of excluding or neglecting any of these users. To belie the mistaken belief that books are the select preserve of a chosen few, it continues to cater for a mass audience following quality-based criteria.

FIVE DAYS OF EXHIBITIONS AND ACTIVITIES

A TOTAL IMMERSION IN THE WORLD OF BOOKS

A whole variety of initiatives make the Fair accessible to all. Conferences are staged year by year to monitor the state of health of books. They allow the general public to have its say in the debate on situations and problems about which it previously received little or no information. The Fair's efforts and projects in aid of books have helped to make the picture clearer, generating fresh new energies among specialist and lay readers alike.

Every year the Fair hosts the cultural initiatives of institutions, business associations, publishers and newspapers and periodicals to encourage high-profile, wide-ranging debate on a full gamut of interesting topics. Since its third year, the event itself has taken on a thematic character, choosing a specific cultural topic as a cue for further discussion.

The topics dealt with since 1990 have been: European Cultural Identity and Describing Myth, 1990; the relationship between humour and narration - Humour and Narration, 1991; the 'art' of genius - Genius and Rebellion, 1992; a survey of the reasons why reading is sometimes overlooked and the 'secrets' of select subjects (A notification of investigation on cars, publishing, education and television, The secrets of art, music and advertising, 1993); the identification of what is true and what is false in given cultural areas (What is true and what is false in science, art, history, literature, journalism and philosophy, 1994); the analysis of the breakaway phenomena of the twentieth century and the cultural points of reference associated with the political concepts of right and left (Ninety-five%. Pop Art: revolution and revelation, Where is right and where is left, 1995).
